Evo gearbox transplant?

Was talking to Dave (antilag) the other day about the weaknesses of the gearbox on the R when looking for big power and possible solution when we came on the thought of transplanting a Evo box into a gtir
Has anybody ever looked into this or tried this before :?: the gearbox is the same basic setup (eg fwd with transfer box) and providing the tranfer box would fit around the rear of the gtir engine without offsetting the gear box we recon it could be done with either a modified evo bell housing or a adaptor plate that bolts to the R engine then the evo box bolts to that, then using either a modifed evo flywheel or a redrilled R flywheel to fit the Evo clutch etc obviously it would also require custom front drive shafts and front prop aswell as a modified gear linkage aswell as some other messing around but the benefits would be.
Gearbox good for 700+ bhp
Lighter gearbox setup so would help the handling and balance of car 8)
Better front/rear bias
better diff technology etc etc
I've just been checking out the mlr and secondhand gearboxes are around the £400 mark to 8) even if it cost £1500 to fit it thats still a hell of a lot cheaper than a Par/quaife gearset and the whole transmission would be uprated so there would be no transfer/diff worries either (apart form the rear one that is)

Ahh would probably also need a custom crown wheel and pinion for the gtir diff though as the ratio will probably be different :( but then again i'm sure the rear evo diff could also be fitted with a modified rear beam and drive shafts :p

After all if they can fit skyline boxes in Ford escort cossies etc why can't we do the same with a Evo box :?:

tbh would it not be easier to put the evo engine and box into the R rather than trying to mate them together.

Can't see why it can't be done, I know it's been done a few times with 323 GTR/GTX's. Someone lend (give) me a box, rear diff and shafts and i'll try it.

:p :p :p :p :p :p :p

If it would fit i'd definatly consider fitting one to my car cos i'm always breaking my box  The evo box is way better than the gti-r one. I've thought before when looking at pics of the evo box that the gearbox/transferbox arrangement does look similar to the R.

Come on Dave and Ginga, get the ball rolling :D

Do they do a 6 speed evo box? :D

I was reading something on mlr a while back, can't remember what is was  but I'm sure it was a transmission problem with with the high power cars. Maybe Mike can shed light and say it was nothing to do with gearboxes. :?

simon norris has been running a shot peened standard box with longer 5th gear and rc developments are running one two so even if it cost 3k for a shotpeen and full rebuild and made to fit its a bargin it shud take 650hp all day long low 10's here we cum may b even in the 9's cos u cud go for as much power ass possible

no way.. evo motors come out of factory on 18 pound stock and are very detuned to run 208kw

Shot peening

I'd say the main advantages are you can do it to the origional equipment, so no new items need making, and it's easy to do.

well i 3 engine builders have worked on both engines and have told me that the sr20det rnn14 is a better engine all round

u cnt really bore out the 4g63 engine much it has thin walls

The transfer casing is so close to the block on both cars though, you'd be pretty lucky for it to clear the block, the rack, have output shafts in the same place (Roughly).

You could get a flywheel made/machined but the starter prob wouldnt clear the block, those evo motors certainly are slim.

Dunno reall........i'd be interested to see how close they are but matching a rear drive box is a piece of p1ss, nothing like trying to mount a transverse box and transfer case.

Certainly not something you would want to pay someone to do!!

Thinking about the flywheel you would need to make it from scratch unless by any chance the evo flywheel is smaller in all dimensions to the R one (Which i imagine it will be smaller dia but thicker) you would turn it down and use the evo ring gear and evo clutch.

Just havin a measure of the two boxes along side each other would do, i imagine the Evo box with a 6th gear will be too long to go inside the chassis rails (Unless you space frame the front of the R! Dave??)

Thinkin about it thats what i'd do, space frame the R, then you could position the engine to suit the box instead of the other way around.

You've got me thinking now, sorry for the totally random post, just thinkin out loud.

The SR20 engine is a lot better designed. U only got to go and ask the Evo lot who are in the know and they wont deny the SR20 block is better designed. Have us seed both side to side and know what to look for??
