No exhaust

Hey there. I'm soon going to go get a custom exhaust made for my R. This my sound like a stupid question but i'm not sure on the answer. What effect would running my R for a few hundred miles without any exhaust sysytem have apart from the noise? Just need to know so i know if it's safe or not to run it up there with the old system off. Thanks a lot for any help.

i wouldn't mate! leave the old system on
the exhaust's there for a reason & it's not just noise
maybe a couple of miles but a couple of hundred!! + the cops might like to give you a ticket for noise polution

Apart from the incredible noise (and the flames that'll come out of what's left, possibly igniting something under the car), it would depend on how much of the exhaust is missing. The main purpose of an exhaust, apart from silencing, is to channel heat away from the engine or turbo. If you run an engine without a manifold it will crack the head very quickly as the hot exhaust gasses will just sit around the exhaust ports, giving localised areas of extreme temperatures. I imagine if you tried the same with a turbo blowing straight out into the engine bay you'd end up with the same problem.

If the down-pipe or turbo elbow were still there you might get away with it, but you'd get pulled the instant you went within 100 yards of the fuzz.

I have heard stuff like 1 litre AX's driving about without exhuasts and the noise is defening, can't begin to imagine what an R will sound like.

I drove 3 miles to a custom exhaust place to have one fitted on a Corolla Coupe I used to own. I had nothing but the tubular manifold on it and deafening doesn't begin to describe the noise. Everybody, and I mean everybody was turning around and looking at me like I was a complete c**t. People in passing cars, people on the street, people were even coming out of shops to find out what the racket was. My ears were ringing afterwards.

My escort RS turbo exhaust come apart when i went over a speed bump it was well loud everyone looked it sounded like a tank :lol:

dont do it dude ive driven both my r's 12 miles with no exaust its a nitemare and u will get pulled over and you will get complaints if driving at nite and like the other guys say its dangerous and u cant even crawl at low revs its hjust as bad

You're not wrong, I fired it up and thought 'oh shit, this is going to be interesting', but I had no other way of getting there. Even on idle it was shaking the windows of my house :lol: :lol:

yep with no exhaust teh R fooking loud i started mine up in teh garage with no exhaust when teh rebuild was finished sounded deafening

Fair enough then i dont think i'll bother. Was gonna drive from essex to sheffield with everything from the downpipe missing. Sounds a bit risky now though.
