Hi guys,
PROBLEM SOLVED
Posting this up as did a search and had no joy, have now learned and putting up for anyone for future.
Basically, I hit the rev limiter twice, after which car kinda stuttered on idle and cut out.
Restarted fine but ran rough and cut out.
Symptoms:
- Hit Rev Limitter
- Car doesn't idle properly
- Runs on 3 cylinders
- misses and struggles a lot when driving, almost like in safety mode.
- floods one plug or more
Diagnosis:
- remote possibility of having droppping a valve, but would hear noise and rattles
- Also possibly knocked Rocker off top of shims and thus not opening Exhaust/inlet cam.
Method:
- Remove Rocker cover and inspect Rockers to see if still in place.
Solution:
Done this and the pics show the results.
Rocker had moved to side slightly and knocked off the shims.
One of the shims can actually be seen in the right hand side by inlet cam.
Rocker sits on shims which sit on valve springs.
a relatively easy fix by removing the cam and replalcing shims if needed and re-fitting Rocker.
Apparently this is a common problem on SR20's when running off the limitter and happens a few drifter boys a fair bit..
Now out for pints to celebrate a cheap fix after what was thought to be damage!
FYI - it is possible to drive in this state. I ran 300 miles home from Santa Pod luckily.
See pics for more info.
Moral and Cheap Lesson - stay away formt he limitter... no matter how good it sounds!!!
Rocker slipped off shims/vavle springs
More general view:
Rocker and shim circled, relief!!
