Diff Shim?

I followed the guide on the sr20 forum to remove the gearbox with the engine in situ and was a little confused by the following part;

undo the cast bracket that fits to the transfer box end case. Now, undo the transfer box end case, and pull the diff out, (do not lose the shim that sits in the end case) the connecting shaft is part of the diff and comes with it.

What I did differently was to leave the transfer box on the car by just undoing the cast bracket on the driver's side (pictured below);

I then slid the transfer box as far over as possible while wiggling the gearbox to get it off. Leaving me with this;

Now I'm assuming that this shim lies inside the transfer and I was right not to see it at all?

I just wanted to double check that I should have come across it when I haven't.
