Timing Chain.....how to tell??

How do you know when your timing chain, tensioner, guides need to change??...........when i start my car i get a chattering/clonking kinda sound from inside the engine and my car pinks really badd............is this related to the timing chain??..........any advice would be appreciated.........

If you're not to sure, get a friendly mechanic to have a listen in case it's the bearings (big end or main ) especially if you've been pinking badly for a while.
