Pulsar T25 turbo upgrade?!?!

Hi everyone,

I've been clicking through e-bay for R parts and found this advertised turbo as a Pulsar GTi-R upgrade. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200595089505&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123

Now I don't claim to know everything, that's why I'm posting this, but to the best of my knowledge; the standard turbo on our beloved GTi-R is a T28?! The T28 is a 'larger' turbo with a greater capacity for boost pressure? Infact, I know for a fact that many of the 200sx S13 owners upgrade from the standard T25 to the T28.

Bearing the above in mind, I mailed the e-bay member advertising this T25 turbo to enquire as to how it is an upgrade. They forwarded me the attached link - http://www.canadagtir.com/forums/canada-gtir/members-cars/chech-out-my-pulsar . I've read it and it comes across to me as forum fodder. Am I wrong?

I've also checked out the specific turbo on the web and found this - http://www.jdmperformance.com.au/products/DSR_380_TURBO-6-12.html . It's not hard to do, but I'm confused.

Can anyone shed any light on this share their view on whether this truly is an upgrade? I'm not concerned whether it is or not, just intrigued.

Cheers for your input!!!

Isn't DSR cheap Chinese rubbish? - I'm sure I've read threads that say:
  1. It's not a "direct fit" you need to grind a bit of block (or turbo housing) off to make it fit.
  2. People have complained that the turbo never actually reaches the boost it's supposed to.
  3. The units are often not assembled correctly (loose bolts/seals/etc), but work well enough if you reassemble them yourself.
I don't know about them personally, and I can't access eBay from work (it's blocked). However, I suspect I've seen the same eBay item which is what prompted me to do a bit of googling and come to the above conclusion.

I think you're better off buying a named brand (be it original Garrat; Holset; or someone like Borg Warner). You pay a bit more, but the quality means it doesn't give-up and take your engine with it.

Obviously I'm happy to be corrected. As I say, I've just googled "DSR turbo" and made my mind up based on the results.

From what I've read, if you don't want to go above 10PSI (~0.7 bar) it will be ok... but if you were looking for 14PSI (~1bar) it can't do it. I get the impression the seals just aren't good enough to hold the pressure.

I'm half expecting DSR turbos to come onto the forum and start slagging me off like they did to the people who originally made these claims in NZ.
