Opinions please to quieten my exhaust !

Chaps,

Basically, I'm after opinions on how to reduce the sound level of my exhaust. I was pulled over by the Police today and he issued me with a vehicle defect notice for my exhaust. And to add to that, he wants me to go down to the station, show him the car and prove to him that it's been done !

That's what you get for enjoying your car for 30 seconds at the weekend. It grates me as, I'm always considerate with other people in mind as, I know the cars noisy. One little squirt on an open road with no houses around and I get pulled for it !

Anyway, the exhaust is a custom Hayward & Scott job consisting of a 3" elbow and downpipe, tapering into a 2.5" pipe from the flexi section back. With unsilenced de-cat pipe and 'can' type rear silencer.

What's gonna be the best and cheapest way to drop the sound level to 'production' levels or there abouts ?

I've thought of exhaust valves, transverse rear box but, want to know what will be the most effective.

Cheers

Paul

They don't need an SPL meter as, the car has to have sound levels similar to that of a car that rolled off the production lines. It's obvious that most R's, including mine, don't meet that criteria. Plus, it's one of those subjective laws so, what they say goes !

I'm thinking of doing what Jim did (Bahh) and get a transverse rear box in an attempt to drop the noise levels slightly.

I think your cheapest option would be to do the above and if your feeling really extravagant get that unsilenced decat pipe replaced with a silencer

Went down the cop shop today to produce my documents and get a clearer picture of what the officer wants with regard to my exhaust.
The nice lady at the desk got him on the phone so I could discuss it with him and I really was getting nowhere. He thinks the car is a GTI so, "I should get a GTI exhaust fitted to it" ?! Numerous times I told him it was a GTiR, not a GTI and the exhaust for a GTI wouldn't even fit due to the different floor pan etc... He then said that the noise output should be similar to what a 2.0l production car would produce. So I said a 2.0l Vectra would sound completely different to a 2.0l Evo and the GTiR was more comparable to the Evo. He still thinks it should sound more like the Vectra than the Evo. In the end, he said that it should be somewhere between the Vectra and the Evo.
It's clear he doesn't have a clue as, he said my numberplate digits were too small, and they aren't and, the road traffic act section he quoted to me is wrong but "you should have another look at it" was his response when I told him it was incorrect. And to top it off, he thinks the car is a GTi. I'm really tempted to go and see a solicitor for advice !

Anyway, do you guys think a transverse rearbox would drop the level to 'between a Vectra and an Evo' ? Or would I need the de-cat pipe silencing too ?

Cheers

Paul

When he done a check on your reg it may have came up as a GTi. When I done a check on my reg it came up GTo instead of GTi-R.

I can't understand why you went to the expense of having exhaust like that made with out the cat bypass box built in anyway :? Its madness :der: .

My new system will include the biggest cat bypass box I can get in the space available as well as the transverse rear box ;-) , I can't understand all you youngsters who want all that bl00dy noise  :der: .

Get rid of that unsilenced de cat pipe for a start, that'll make a noticable difference ;-)

I put a straight through de cat pipe on my mongoose system last year and it made it sound a hell of a lot louder (sounded completly sh1te too  ) it was only on the car for about 2 days before i ripped it off and put the silenced de cat back on, the extra noise was so bad i was actually embarrassed to drive the car

Can some tell me what these transverse boxes are please

Why not just get a silencer/bung like you would use for a track day. Have to admit I'm with Rob, why do you want all the noise?

get a scorpion cat back exhaust.mine has an unsilenced decat and it is about as quiet as a standard evo etc at idle and normal driving.

The transverse box just goes across the back of the car and exits out the passenger side unlike the standard one, A bit like the standard fitment one but with out the double loop back over to the drivers side ;-) .

Youngsyp,

Sorry to hear your problem. (excuse the pun) That PC sounds like a bit of a noob.
Most police I have met over the time I have been driving modified motors / bike have been resonable and many are car fanatics themselves and generaly want to discuss performance and the car and would turn a blind eye to an after market exhaust.
I think now however in this nanny state that we live in, what with the ASBO's etc this is going to become more of an issue.
I agree with Markturbo as my R which I bought in November has a mongoose without cat and it's driving me mad and embarressing. I use FM radio headphones to drown out the noise. :music:
Try to get a system that has CAT back fittings.

In saying that, my goose has cat back pipe but I do not have a CAT to fit.

Even with a silenced de cat and a transverse rear box it's not going to be as quite as a Evo/Vectra.

Thats just ridiculous, what is this copper a total kill joy or what ?

I assume you have a current MOT and the existing exhaust was on the car when it was MOT'd, if it was I fin it hard to believe it would have passed it's MOT.

If all else fails I would get a volume check done and then be seeking a little legal advice.

Yep, it has a valid MOT and the car was 'as is' at the time. It did get an advisory about the exhaust being noisy but, that's it. Oh, and it had an advisory about the number plate at the front being too small but, I have proof that's not the case either. It's also gone throught the last 3 MOT's with no worries too !

The thing that worries me is the fact that he's looking for sound output similar to a GTI. That's never gonna happen with the GTiR as, it'll only have 1 silencer, even with the OE exhaust on it, won't it ?! And the DVLA information has the car as a 'Black Nissan' no specific model info. The car even still has the GTiR badge on the back to give him a hint !

It just pisses me off that I was doing nothing wrong and I've had no complaints but now, I could be looking at a court appearance !

Oh, and to top it off, he even admitted to having a 'sports exhaust' on his own car !!!

The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that I could discredit him if it went to court. It's just a catalogue of errors on his part, what with not knowing the DVLA rulings on import numberplate sizes, thinking the car is a GTI and quoting the wrong road traffic act section to me (this is in writing on the producer). I think I'll go and see the Citizens Advice Bureau and depending on what they say, get some legal advice from a specialist solicitor !

Don't get me wrong though, I do think the exhaust is too loud, I did when they put the thing on the car but, I don't take kindly to an ignorant police man who thinks he know's everything, and clearly doesn't, dictating to me what I can and can't do. He's clearly ovestepping his boundaries !

Rant over !

Thanks for all your replies !

This should be the sort of sound level I can get with a transverse rear box I reckon. I'll get a silenced de-cat pipe made up too, just for good measure !

For those who didn't see it the first time, here's my exhaust:

http://www.gtiroc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44350&highlight=exhaust

You can just see the mid box in one photo and the transverse box in the other. I've since tidied the rear bumper up and cut our the middle bit between the holes, sanded down the old lip and fibre glassed the rough edges. Stu had his done last week and made the right hand side hidden.

The exahust is good, you can easily hold down a conversation at motorway speeds and around town it sounds sporty loud without being embaressing. Its still louder than OE and its loud when you open up the throttle etc but a quiet exhaust on full throttle would just sound wrong to me.
