Odd Sound- transfer box maybe?

The car sat for a few years after the rebuild but I'm now getting everything sorted.

The car has done about 300 miles and there is a strange whirring sound coming from what sounds like just under the gear stick (around the transfer box area). I did notice the gear box was short 1 litre of oil and the transfer box about 1/3 so I've topped this up.

Other than checking the wheel bearings what other things can I check.

It's almost like the whirr you get when in reverse (gear teeth meshing) just not so loud and a bit more grindy!

If the gearbox has not been rebuilt, I'll put money on it that it's the gearbox bearings.

is there anyway to check anything gearbox or transfer box wise to see if either are at fault short of dropping them off the car? Anything that could be seized or locked which is spinning when it shouldn't be?

I could drop the prop shaft off to rule that out I guess.
