I use nissan consult which you can get on ebay for 15 quid (you may need a USB adaptor for your lap top). Then get a copy of Nissan data scan from Nissandatascan.com From there you can read what the ecu is seeing etc.

You can also buy from somewhere like ECUTalk who make a diagnostic unit for Consult.

ECU talk will read a fair amount of monitors and fault codes and they do a free version but you do need old .Net (v1.1 i think for it to run) will also run on an old hp ipaq as a handy tool :)

Unless you have an old laptop, very few if any today will have a serial port, so get a Consult to USB cable.

Didnt realise they did usb ones, shows how long I've had mine- might have to upgrade lol.
