Gearbox : how easy to strip the casing off for a 'looksee'?

Have done a reasonable amount of gearbox rebuilds over the years, but not touched a GTIR one.

How easy is it to strip the covers off to see the guts?

Reason is I have bought a s/h one and am not sure about its history or the guy I have bought it from

Looked through the new index (very impressive) but couldn't see where I should have posted this question...

Thanks
Jon

Undo all the casing bolts, undo the 12 mm bolt on the side of the casing, remove the two 14mm bolts on the end of the casing and with draw the detent springs and ball bearings with a magnet, remove end case , be careful that the Mainshaft or Layshaft preload shims don't fall on the floor as sometimes they get stuck on the end case and disappear .

Dan, followed you instructions, piece of p@@@.

Counted the teeth and took a load photos;
Crown wheel: 66 (cant see pinion)
1st 46:14 3,286
2nd 37:20 1.85
3rd 42:33 1.272
4th 42:44 0.954
5th 37:50 0.74

Probably std ratio I guess. Top three aren't that close, espectically 5th. Box is in mint nick. Good emergency spare or may get someone else out of trouble.

thanks again
Jon
