hi all,
i'm new to this forum and new to owning a GTI-R!!!! :D i can a start by saying what a machine.

anyway, only bought it the other day and it has been causing me abit of trouble when changing into 2nd from 1st or down from 3rd. I was told that the box on a gti-r takes some getting used to.

the car has been modified and has 280bhp. it has a padel clutch. hope it is just a case of me getting used to it. any advice or surgestions on driving are welcome

cheers

chris

you can do syncros and gear sets in situ

Oh no...My 3rd gear's like that
Third gear is on the tender side anyway, just try leaving it slightly longer than usual when changing up and slotting it rather than pushing it in gear. Changing down again leave it slightly longer than usual and give the throttle a slight blip before putting it in gear.

C12 - Can't really see this working for a first to second gearchange though, as its all over and done with in about a second. Just try a slower smoother gear change rather than a snatched change.

i have the same problem with my 2nd gear. I let a box specialist drive it and he told me it was my synchro.

he also said the more i make it crunch, the more damage im doing to the actual gear. just hold it there for a bit and let it take it in, instead of forcing it in.

if i have to make a fast up change i just force it in as fast as i can and it usually takes it with a little crunch. i wouldnt advise doing this often tho.

advise you change all synchros and bearings when you open it up.

Theres no point doing that really, the problem will still be there  Best to just get it sorted before something breaks.

whilst the box is off you may as well have it rebuilt with all new bearings and selector forks etc. Get everything that is remotely worn changed.

So for now rag it everywhere and crash every gearchange, sod the crunchy noises.... turn up the stereo. Something will break then you'll have to get it done.

Otherwise you're going to spend the next six months driving like a pussy, double de-clutching every change and getting thoroughly peeed off with the car as a whole.
