Build quality the GT4, but for speed the GTIR wins hands down, I raced a 350bhp GT4 at crail compared to my R with a goose and a filter and I hammerd it.

The GT4 does look nice though, but I think the R looks better!!

If I only had one car then I might have chosen a GT4 as IMO Toyota quality/reliability is better than Nissan but I would have to expect to get my pants regularily pulled down by other hot hatches not least of which the funny looking Sunny with the big wing on the back.

There's a GT4 owner on here who can probbaly give a better opinon.

If you like the colour pink, ickle bunny rabbits, rainbows and sugar and spice get the GT4

On a serious note though, no idea about the GT4, but I love my R!

heard the GT4 handles greatly, and the GTI-R is pants in standard form...

GT4 has better looks as lets face it coupe's will always look better than hatches..

GT4 has better reliability

GT4 has better comfort - thou not a big difference.

Having driven both with similar power - circa 280bhp, the GT4 is a nice car indeed.

However it fails where most other competitors of high power do, its just too heavy and doesn't have that Kick factor the R does...

If you're not bothered about big power, go with the GT4...

GTI-R's are more fun, have more kick and are very hard to beat with similar power levels...

IF you are, and yes it is very addictive, then get the GTI-R.

I had a ST205 WRC and now own a GTiR, and have done for 4 years.
Imho, the GT4 is a much better alround package. The handling out of the box is far superior, the brakes much better (315mm disc up front with 4 pot alloy calipers, 300mm discs at the rear with 2 pot alloy calipers), the gearbox is much stronger (said to take 600 bhp in standard form iirc) and the engine is just as good as the SR20DET, if not better in standard form. You'll get 255 bhp and 215 ft/lbs iirc from a stock import. With a few very cheap mods to remove the ecu boost control (it limits boost in 1st and 2nd gear) and up the boost to a safe 1.2 bar (just under the fuel cut), you'll get 310 bhp and 290 ish lbs/ft torque. That'll make a very fast car. Mine had a Hayward and Scott full exhaust with 3" elbow and downpipe into a 2.5" decatted system, Blitz SUS filter, lagged charge cooler and about 14 psi of boost and I could keep up with a mildly modded Evo 6 TME with an extra person in my car. As for the R being much quicker, I'm not so sure. I had a play with a fairly standard looking import ST205, a couple of years back and he could keep up with me. I had 2 extra people in the car though and was only running just over standard boost. Having said that, my GTiR now, can stay with TVR Tuscan's and the VXR 220 with a few extra mods and a bit more boost.
Fact is, the GTiR weighs around 1220 kgs and the ST205 around 1380 Kgs (same as an Evo 5 and 6) so, you can make you own judgements from that but, I can tell you a mildly modded ST205 with decent decat exhaust (including larger elbow), lagged charge cooler, large intake filter and 1.2 bar of boost will be very quick.
The chargecooler won't need replacing unless you decide to go over 400 bhp, the OE clutch will handle about 350 bhp/ 310 lbs/ft torque no problem, it has a large air to air oil cooler as standard and an alloy bonnet for lighter weight and better weight distribution
The interior of the GT4 is of a much better quality and you sit in the seats, not on them as you do in the GTiR. All in all, the car is built much better and wont creak and rattle like the GTiR does. It's also very comfortable, a proper junior GT car.

Only real thing to watch out for on the ST205 is the front suspension. Due to the design, the 'figure 8's' will wear quickly and these will need replacing every 50k miles or so. Not a big expense if you know about them. I didn't and ended up shelling out £1000 on OE suspension parts for the front end to cure the knocking !

The only reason why I got rid of mine, was because someone drove into me on a perfectly straight dual carriage way and caused £6800 worth of damage to the front end and so, it got written off. Then I bought the GTiR. if I had the opportunity to won another one, I'd not think twice about it !

Not that I don't like the GTiR of course !! :)

I must admit i love power and i am very much into hot hatches. I hate scooby drivers so showing them up would be a big bonus! and i dont think i could do that in a gt4? I would have a second car so would only be using the R on special occasions so reliability isnt a major factor to me and i wont be putting huge power into either so the R to me sounds like a better car but more opinions needed please!

"creak and rattle like the GTIR" Speak for yourself! Mine doesn't creak and rattle! :)
Ha, ha. My dash rattles like a good un and my AVCR rattles too.
The chassis of the car is rock solid (only my rattly damper letting the side down) but, the interior is very poorly constructed. The parcel shelf rubs against the rear hatch, even my seat belt fastener squeaks. I've sorted the rear panel squeaks now, that was due to broken fixings ! :)

I've had two ST185s, both widebody, one standard, the other (RC version) not so standard. Not as nice as the 205, but I always preferred the 185s looks. Pic1. Pic2. Pic3. <-- My old 185 RC.

Build quality is better, comfort is better, looks are better. But for fun-factor, you can't beat a Pulsar with 300+ bhp.

Random Thoughts:
A Sunny seats 4, a GT4 seats 2 adults and 2 dwarfs.
My Sunny is a great tip car when I remove the rear strut brace, loads of room for throwing all sorts of rubble and garden waste in the back of it.
Good all round visibility being a normal hatchback

For long journeys you got to hate the gti-r if its lowered and set on hard damping, not sure about the celica.
The sunny is great for a weekend/ evening second car with quick blast round the block.
Saying that i distroyed 2 gt4s both claming big power last month.

Do you really have to ask? LOL

A friend of mine had a mint GT4. It was nice and to be fair, pretty quick, but compared to an R, I would have a long hard think about it.

One thing I will say though is that there aint much that will touch a modded GTi-R, and if you got a big yummy front mount then most things will just pull out of your way, he he he he, gotta love em.

Bye bye mr scooby.

Chris.

The rear seats in the GT4 are much more comfortable than the GTiR and, it also has more rear passenger space, including legroom, than the GTiR.
As for the boot, the GT4 has a cavernous boot. Once you remove the OE strut brace, it's even more usable. By comparison, the GTiR's boot is small.

Mmmmh, sounds like I'm trying to convince myself to by another one :) I'm just bitter as I had my one taken away from me through no fault of my own :-(

I like the look of some of the gt4's but that red one was yuk, It looked like a jelly mould, And the guy next door to me at my old house Basingstoke had a modded one that was slow as you like, My 300bhp pulsar murdered it.

I took him out in mine and he told me that the pulsar handled a lot better in the corners than his car, His words where " how the f*ck can you corner so fast" lol.

I suppose me having big AP brakes and a fully set of poly bushes helped a bit though HeHeHe.
