sump plug washer?

picked up a copper sump plug washer from nissan it has a lip all the way round ive not fitted one like this before do you nip it up like normal or does the lip need to be squashed if you know what i mean i know its a silly question lol just want to make sure though thanks

there's a "flat" side and an "open" side, the flat goes towards the head of the bolt, and consequently the "open" side goes towayds the sump.

And yeah it has to be squashed flat
