How to measure shims?

Hi,
I need to reshim my valves. Therefor I have to know, how to measure the shims, to get the exact size like they listed in the Nissan Spare Lists.
The shims look like a cup, with a hole in the middle, to garantue a perfect sit on the valves.
So do I have to measure from the top of the shim into the hole or left/right from the hole?
I hope you know what I mean.

Hi,
ìt doesn`t answer my specific question:
Look at the pic: That`s the shim from the unserside. There is a little hole in the "plate".
Do I have to measure the thickness of the shim between the hole and the Top of the shim or between the "plate" and the top of the shim?

Between the 'plate' and the top face of the shim. The 'plate' bit is the part that makes contact with the top of the valve stem.
