Fuel tank sender unit

If I fill my tank the gauge registers a full tank as the fuel goes down to show just over half a tank, next time you look at the gauge it's on empty, I mean really empty passed the last white line and as you continue to drive it goes down even further to whats probably about 15mm passed the last empty line.

Without ripping the car apart trying to find faulty parts/dodgy connections e.t.c. does anyone know what our fuel tank sender unit looks like, is it an in-tank float or an electrical sensor ?

Its an intank float that moves an arm to what is basically a carbon track, which resistance varies according to the sweeper arms position.

sorry to bring up an old post but does anynone know what resistance measures what ie. what is the resistance at empty halfway and full

Full 5-8 ohms
1/2 29-33 ohms
Empty 92-96mm

Resistance across terminals E- & G+ (rectangular 2pin plug by the looks of it)
