Isn't it spring loaded so that it puts tension on the chain (hence the name)? - Or have I misunderstood what you're asking?

im sure it is hydraulic so once the car is up and running should take up any play like a hydraulic tappet , you usually lose the oil out of them when you have to compress the piston back in to put on the little retaining clip, before fitting .

they are controlled by oil pressure, as the chain slackens over time, the tensioner gradually moves out to take up the slack.

as it does, it comes out on a ratchet system so that i stays out even when the engine is off.

Hiya,

Any pics of the tensioner in situ? Am I correct in thinking that the tensioner has to be fully removed before removing the cams or just loosened?

Thanks,

Lee
