I've heard the never ending warnings about GTiR 'boxes being a weak link, but can someone tell me what specifically is the weak point(s?) of them and what options are there to prevent it happening?

5th gear syncro hub probably cracked which makes the collar tight. Then because you've carried on trying to force it into gear (like a mong :lol:) you've either broken the fork or made the hub break which has then got jammed between the 2 shafts forcing them apart which in turn broke the casing.

could the short sifter started the problem off? I really like it but have heard bad rumours. Whats true?

Many differing views on short shift, Had a Tomei short shift on mine when imported & that was over 12yrs ago & I still on original box & no issues, not running big power but its been given some stick over the years & done a few sprints ... A lot of it is down to luck but a lot down to how you change gear & clutch type you use. Who rebuilt the box ! Many of the gearbox builders do some sloppy builds so could of been unlucky here too ...
