Aircon - can it be recharged?

As above, I was informed that the gas required is the old type and no longer avaliable?

AFAIK it's no longer available. you have to get a converter kit which is two valves and some oil that must be added to the system or the pump will die.

Any ideas on a price for this? just didn't want to try to find a car with Air Con to find out I can't use it anyway lol

As well as converting to run on R142 (I think ) you can also use other gasses in older systems they just arent as effficient. Best bet is to call on your local A/C specialist and see what he recomends as theer may be a cheaper alternative :)

there is 'drop in' refrigerants available, they will run on the same mineral oil used in the R12 system. if you were local to me i'd have charged it for you. the R134a system uses a synthetic oil. see if you can get hold of a refrigeration engineer

Thansk again for all the info, haven't found a GTI-R I like yet :doh: but now I know I can kep the aircon :thumbsup:

im local to you, and mines isnt working to great

arent the drop in refrigerents bad or something ?
You have to empty the whole system of everything before you recharge with a different gas or it will wreck the whole aircon system something along those lines ??
