I used Owen Developments for my Garrett turbo

Just make sure you spec it:

Metal bearing case, heat shield and oil feed filter.

Generally, most of us use Garrett Tubby's out of the box but a few have created their own Spec.
Id say if you are looking for anything upto 400 / 450 bhp your probably best to stick to the "textbuild specs". If you are looking for 500 plus then you can decide what sorts out your needs.

Some companies that sell turbos (OEM or Custom) - Owens, Turbo Dynamics, Universal Turbos, Precision.

If the turbo company comes with good recommendations then that sounds just fine.

Personally I use Universal and have for many years. They have always been good to me.

I'm sure I was talking to someone about "hybrid" turbos (possibly Ed) and they were saying that they can be terrible when people don't know what they're doing. - Garrett (and Holset, and Mitsubishi, etc) put a lot of work into matching compressors with turbines to give the right balance for most applications.

Obviously if you've got an engine or tune that makes use of a miss-matched turbo (for example; small turbine and huge compressor) then you can use that, but if not all you're getting is a laggy or asthmatic turbo which never delivers any power.
