Racing the Pulsar

Phil that is very quiet. How many boxes have you got, and is that at 4000+revs at 1/2 metre. My rhd is around 96, and lhd is 104. both have the same two boxes.I often wonder what makes the extra noise, is it the cams?. I am at the national next weekend at Wiscombe, but looking for new tyres.

talking about this, car was dyno'd and we have found now that the exhaust is holding the car back (3" system with 3 large silencers) still making 500 but now have 450lbft of torque..............will be sorting and re dynoing next week.

Its has 2 small strait through silencers on 12 x 5 and the other 14 x 6 across the back of the car, very pleased with the sound. It is also has a lot more ground clearance than before, I spent the day making it with them. So my design and my head on the block if its wrong..

We did look, and a bigger system could be fitted (3.5 or 4 ins) but the fuel tank would have to be removed to make room over the subframe.

Got back racing on the weekend in Shelsley Walsh, was a bit rusty after 3 months off and still did no trust the old tyres 100%.
Did a resonable practice on the 3rd run and was 2nd overall. Porker GT3 in the lead.
On race day used the new setting high boost and had wheel spin in 2nd gear and actually went a bit slower than the day before but had 2nd place.
After lunch put together a better run just over one tenth off my best time and secured 2nd, not a bad result. Nice suppries was the finishing speed, it does not sound a lot but I was 3mph quicker than ever before over the finish ( faster than the GT3) at 96mph..thats in a 200m strait. So the power is now roughly on the limit for the hills but need to get the car around the corners a bit quicker,,,new tyres will help next year just wish I could find wider ones in 16 in and the same profile.
PS a 3ins exhaust is much better was well within the noise check and gained me 40+bhp at the wheels with the boost slightly turned up.

I have decided to pack it in for the year, the car has no grip so no point in strugling on, will save the money and put it towards next season and hope its much better,,,to be honest I cant be much worse,,2012 best forgoton..
Will hopefully run wider tyres in 2013 to give a bit more grip. Apart from that I might try of losing more weight of it and thats about it....

From my limited experience compound is everything, not necessarily width. More width may even be worse. My rallycar spins up off the line and under/over steers dreadfully till 1/4 mile in when some heat is generated. Had the same probs doing rallycross. Everybody had. Found the best way to heat them up was to overdrive the 1st 1/4 mile so it moved around.
I'm sure you know all this anyway. Soft is king. For the same reason I dislike lots of camber
Good luck when you get back. You will miss the sport, for sure.

I will be sticking with the same soft compound Kumho trackday tyres as when they were new I had no problems even from cold or in the wet, but when you look around the padock at the scoobies, evo's etc 205 width tyres are really not enough to give max grip on a car of this weight and power, I dont have the luxury of warming the tyres up for 1/4 of a mile as over half the run would be over, and I cant risk spinning them up each time to warm them on the line with our grearboxes.
I agree going too wide is bad as I did that on a Mini Years ago when I went 2ins wider but adding another 20mm of thread per tyre can only help, Mark Turbo runs the width I want to use, and as you said not to much camber to make sure the contact pad is there for braking etc. Im only missing one event at the end of the year and the money saved will go into the pot for 2013. As for time I also have a mobile home to totaly fit out and moulds for the front wings to complete...I have learned one thing in life we will never have enough time or money to do all the things I want to do...lol

I have spent most of the long cold winter building a Camper van to tow the car to meetings, only a few more bits to do then its back racing the Pulsar for probably the last season.. I will be putting the car up for sale soon as I am just finalising plans for the next car. Will be a shame to see the Pulsar go as its probably been the most succesfull car I have raced but its time to move on. I will inform you all when its on pistonheads or some where simular as I will advertise it as a race car.

I will still have the moulds, so can make panels when I get the time, unless I sell the lot with the car, we will see....
I could have probaly made the Pulsar a bit quicker each year but I want to make a big jump forward so need something with a much better power to weight ratio and easier to maintain and push around....will reveal more once she is sold.

Single seater??

Good luck for this year, hopefully you can repeat your past success with the car 8)

Most of my racing budget this year will be going on a new turbo/manifold etc so I'm taking a year off  I'm just going to concentrate on making the car better ready for next year.

No not a single seater but a saloon with a power to weight ratio in the 700 to 800 BHP/Ton.....as you can see trying to get that in a Pulsar would not be easy and massively expensive..belive it or not engine wise it will be standard not tuned. I will tell more once I get it all cleared as being legal.
It will race in the over 2 litre Libre Class..
if anybody is interested in the Pulsar please pm me with your email and I will send details etc. or go to oramracing.co.uk
