New Range Rover Sport

There was the new one parked at work today, I expect it was a demo model for some PR thing.

Pretty average looking in the flesh though I'm sure we'll see '000s of them on the road driven by wanna be WAGS.

I can see why these cars are becoming more popular, the roads on my drive to work are like some 3rd world country.

Still not a fan.

I've never really understood the appeal of "sports" and "road" versions of 4x4 vehicles. - You either need (want) a 4x4 or you don't; my in-laws have always had a Nissan Patrol the whole time I've known them (both a ute and a wagon), so I do understand that feeling of sitting in a huge car towering over the rest of the traffic... but they are a real pain in the arse to park; the turning circle is awful, you can't see the corners, and they will hit low-hanging objects.

However, if you want to take a short-cut through the bush; those desert duellers come into their own. Equally if you've got 2 tonnes of something to move that big diesel barely breaks a sweat.

You get your own parking space outside the local dealers when you buy one.

Because they are never out of there for warranty repairs.

Over here in North Yorks we officially have the worst roads in the country. That last Top Gear special where they were recking their cars on that potholed road could have been shot here. God help the Tour de France next year if the council don't get their arse in gear.
I had to change both front shox for the last mot due to broken springs.

I think there can be something quite cool about utility vehichles, Hi-lux, unimog, land rover etc. SUV's are generally not very sporty or useful. Like Carl says, our roads are just atrocious nowadays.

Are they still that bad???
A pal of mine bought a new one 6 or 7 years ago and the build quality was shockingly bad.

I do like the Landcruiser, but I prefer the Patrol. - It's a good point though; if you want a luxury 4x4 the Lexus LX is a 'cruiser with all the options ticked.

On the subject of Land/Range Rovers: Did anyone watch that show about the Road to Recovery team in the Dakar rally? Every one of those Bowlers broke-down or had problems with heat or altitude; I remember when the Discovery was launched they had to have drip trays in the show room to stop the mess from the diffs leaking. - Maybe Land rovers keep going because you learn to fix them quickly, and after a while it's just part of normal ownership?

I second the lancruiser vote, a friend has an Amazon that's done 250k almost never serviced, another at 180k and my dad has one at 160k again, serviced about once each 3 years  all of them have had very little done to them and not skipped a beat

Landcruisers are awesome but hardly the same market sector as a Range Sport, in price point, refinement or performance. The supercharged V8 is mind boggling, a car that big shouldn't be able to move the way it does.

20 year old nissan sunny's shouldn't do what they do either, if you want a fast lancruiser just look for one from Saudi.

Not in the same league but we have discovery 4's on the fleet at work and I have to say they are a joy to drive particularly with the 8 speed gearbox. Wouldn't want to pay to run one though, its body off for most jobs including cam belt.

I agree with Danny and VSS Toyota and Nissan ( both used by the UN) make far better 4 x 4 than those over priced over rated bits of crap from LR they are only for posers and wan*ers who cant see further than the badge on the bonnet.
I had a 20 year old Toyota Surf and the dam thing was bullet proof with NO RUST and still going strong...could tow a trailer through a ploughed field,,,or bath of mud and often did.
I know an idiot who thinks his disco is great but has had more problems in 3 years then the Surf had in 20....
