I know you fitted a quaife 3rd/4th pair, did not know you fitted 5th as well, I would be really surprised if you stripped a 5th gear as I run one and so does dan f and that's with a lot more torque, if you have broken anything I would suspect more likely was the hub on the shaft, count your self lucky I snapped in two a Mainshaft and ripped the centre out of a clutch.

and yeah call me if you like

Ps no they don't suffer the same issue as a fwd box, but they can break the circlip holding the other gears on the out put shaft on launch and make a mess......as I have done before.

Seems an odd thing to break really. - You're already at speed, and shift from fourth to fifth, and *crunch* no gear; everything is already spinning, and the ratio is low so it's not like there's a load of torque being applied to the gear.

If the (synchro?) hub goes; is the gear still there, just not where it can be selected?

Quaife do say that you need to modify the 1st/2nd/reverse synchro slider, and the reverse idler gear; but there's nothing about modifying the 5th gear synchro.

Obviously it was the conversation we had at the time that made me think to look at their website. - I've got no idea what the implications of the machining (or rather not machining) is.

Right, the modifications you do to fit a quaife are absolutely nothing to do with 5th, one is a pitch of xdegrees to stop the reeves idler from touching the input shaft and the other is to stop the dog ring on the Mainshaft from touching the input shaft when you select second gear, the fifth gear hub is actually made from cast steel and is of a design that means it is weak compared to the 3rd/4th hub and will and has been known before to break, also on a turbo charged car 3/4/5 are under more torque load than say second as the engine is labouring more and in a higher ratio so is creating more load on them also you have aerodynamics or lack of coming in to effect making torque a huge factor in it all I and some of the old members have seen the hubs fail a few times on higher power cars.

And just for clarification a quaife 3/4/5 the will fit in a standard gearbox on the stock input and out put shaft with absolutely no other modifications or machine work at all

"Manxman Higgins broke the 19m 30sec barrier, exceeding 160mph in places around the Mountain circuit."

We exceeded 140mph in places around the mountain but only managed to do a lap in just over an hour
    :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

I blame George for not letting us overtake that damn Audi, we'd have broken the hour barrier otherwise :hide:

Joking aside, it brought all the happy memories of our weekender flooding back

    Nice.

Update, my 5th gear sliders and syncro was completely destroyed (all broken in 4 pieces)

    The inspection goes on...

I didn't exceed 140mph, that was part of the problem... that and I pulled-over because I thought we wanted a fuel stop (although we all made it back to Douglas).

It's quite nice to be able to watch the TT racing and say "I know where they are" and "wow, they've got some nerve; I wouldn't do 100mph in a car on that bit!"

I see there's a new piece of tarmac at Crosby where they were digging during our lap.

I'm already thinking about how to prepare for my next visit... ;-)

Sorry to hear about the 5th gear Andy; let's hope the fragments didn't damage anything else.

No need to defend George, I was only teasing ;-) Agree with what you say about watching the TT, amazing riders.

Andy, does this mean your 5th gear is okay?

The gear itself is ok, everything around it was destroyed.

Not with any flames, but I'll trawl through what I've got and put something together also
