In that case buy a new one. ;-) Mine is in pretty good condition, for a 20+ year old unit; it still has a little shaft play and the compressor tips have been eroded.
I've been looking at EFR's as a potential upgrade. They seem to have a pretty good motorsport record and have ceramic, metal cage bearings and a 30 psi rating out the box as well as some other nice features like forged milled compressor wheels. I haven't got the tape measure out yet yet but...
I was planning on getting a "spare" head and taking time over it, lapping looks ok the retainers look interesting and terminal if it goes wrong. Can you still get shims or get them made up?
I was thinking of hand lapping the valves and swopping out the seals, springs, retainers and reshimming with feeler gauge if needed. If the guides were iffy I'd have to get some new ones. I don't have big power plans so I wasn't thinking of porting. bigger cam maybe.
I'd go down and check it all over, if it isn't perfect or he hasn't got all original and new parts to hand you could make his life quite difficult. Small claims court........ And as Makaveli says name and shame.
