The question is for us 400bhp mongs, what ECU's would be best. I'm not overly impressed with the Nistune and although Power FC is a fave with some, would something like a Motec M48 be worth looking at, or is that overkill?

I would say yes its overkill. Save your money unless you are trying to squeeze every last drop out of a smaller turbo to make the power for competition or something else. I personally like the Power FC's as you can add the Controller but I think Nistune is easier to use and probably better nowadays with the updates.

Motec m48...love motec you buy an ecu and yhen have to pay again to have the features un locked..the syvec s6 is a better unit and you can run certain coil on plug setups on it which is a mile better ign wise than the distributor systems as you can run larger plug gaps...this gives you a better running car at low rpm as well as many other benefits of a high power ign system.

@PobodY Haltech ecu's are great. Complete standalone system has its own loom. This literally replaces the engine section of the standard loom. So you need to be confident with wiring or buy one 2nd hand that's already wired up and ready.
My cuz had this set up a few years ago on a GT35R set up. Car made almost 600 bhp. The engine management could have been governed alot more better but the so called tuner who mapped it was a pussy and after 50 miles driving back on boost the engine detted and all the gauges read wrong on the motorway and straight on the bone to the AA for the drive of shame. Car got broke in the end...
The ecu with the harness sold for a monkey and that was with the understanding that the map was shit and will fail the lump. The person was fine with it and had full confidence with his mapper in Oz.
So a word of advice and ill tell you this for free... If you want to go down the haltech route, make sure that the person who maps it knows their shit as the haltech system is very sophisticated if they talk the talk make sure their prepared to walk the walk when things go wrong. The product was amazing let's have that right. It was the tuner who was an amateur. So don't be put off the ecu.

The disadvantage of the Haltech compared to the Syvecs is the lack of closed loop knock control.
What does that mean in a nut shell?
If it senses knock it will retard the ignition.
Oh Nistune....if you only could do this!
